LCBO District #11 Visits Ontario Craft Brewers May 2nd, 2008 No Comments »
Last year, I had the pleasure of sitting beside Chris Elliot (District Manager for the LCBO) at a Beer Guys & Gals training session. The LCBO “Beer Guys & Gals” are the brilliant group of people that the LCBO employs and trains to help and to empower YOU beer lovers to explore the ever-expanding beer section at the LCBO. When Chris and I met, we talked about having some of his store managers ‘live in the shoes of an OCB brewer for a day’….. well…. as we all know – time fly’s by and we pulled the day together just last week!
The OCB hosted the Chris Elliot and 15 of his managers from District 11 (Mississauga/Oakville/Burlington). The group visited 5 OCB breweries: Cameron’s Brewing Company, Black Oak Brewing Company, Great Lakes Brewery, Nickel Brook Beers, and Trafalgar Brewing Company.
Attendees spent the morning at these breweries and enjoyed a brewery tour, a quick sampling of some of OCB beer… and then it was time to work!! Though not all the breweries were brewing that day…. there’s never a shortage of work to be done! Attendees were put to work doing quality checks (with some sampling of beer in the early stages of ‘brewing’ cycle), Kettles were scrubbed… and so much more. Not to worry though – fun was had by all!
Following a morning of work, the group were invited by Mike Arnold of Trafalgar brewing to enjoy chef George’s great food at The Tide House! Everyone enjoyed a fantastic meal, with food made with beer (the chilli is my personal favourite!) along with a beer matching (who can resist the Maple Beer?!). The OCB shared some insight as to all the exciting things happening this summer – including the OCB’s Discovery Pack re-launch!
The OCB was really pleased to have Chris and his team visit a few of our breweries for the day! I always say that the best way to experience the OCB is to visit the brewery first hand! Thank you Chris for your enthusiasm and for your continued support as the OCB builds our partnership with the LCBO!
Enjoy a couple of photo’s from the day – we hope to see some of Chris’s team ‘jump on this blog’ and share some of their experiences from the day!
Cheers!
Relaxing after a day’s work at an OCB Brewery!

Craft Brewers Conference April 24th, 2008 No Comments »
Howdy all,
Well, somehow we all survived the trip to San Diego for the Annual Craft Brewers Conference. Don’t ask me how…especially with a daytrip to Tijuana thrown in for good measure.
Anetta, Peter, Mike and I all made the trek down and were joined by a bunch of our fellow OCB members. The brave souls included John from Church Key, the two Jason’s from Cameron’s, George from F&M, Doug from St. Andre’s, Steve and Matt from Beau’s, and some other familiar faces including Chris from the Rhino (great bar at Queen & Dufferin), Paul from Pepperwood Bistro in Burlington, and Mirella from Beerology. Quite a crew!
We attended a number of interesting seminars, none of which were better than one called “Thinking Outside the Pumpkin” with the three wise men from the US: David Buhler from Elysian, Marty Jones from Oskar Blues, and Greg Koch from Stone. Not only the most inspring seminar, but by far the funniest too. We listened to their stories and those from the audience on how to get attention from consumers and the media by, well, thinking outside the pumpkin. So stay tuned for some fun Great Lakes events in the future (such as our Orange Peel Ale release party…more info to come).
The highlight of the trip for me was visiting Stone in Escondido. It was the Disneyland of breweries. Unbelievable. I was fortunate enough to go twice, once for the opening reception with 1500 other brewers, and secondly for a private tour and lunch on their ridiculous patio. If you’re ever anywhere even remotely close to this place, you owe it to yourself to stop in for a visit.
All in all, it was an amazing trip, and it has inspired me to get in touch with our customers more than ever while continuing to brew great beer. Stay tuned for a Great Lakes blog page where we’ll have lots of fresh news…
Orange You Curious? March 27th, 2008 1 Comment »
Looking for a taste that’s sure to a-peel?
Perhaps something to cure what ales you?
Any way you slice it, you’re sure to enjoy our spring and summer seasonal, Orange Peel Ale.
Pouring a beautiful copper colour, it boasts a subtle aroma of orange (a touch more than last year) that carries through in the flavour with a pleasant bitterness in the finish. We think it’s the perfect beer for the warm weather, especially on a patio (which isn’t that far off!)
Bottles are now available at our brewery, and it should be on tap at a number of familiar licensees in the coming days and weeks. The LCBO will also be carrying bottles in late May as part of their Summer Beer Release, but until then, you can only get it directly from us.
You can find us near Royal York and the Queensway, just a field goal away from Costco.
Cheers,

Canadian Brewing Awards - Take 1 November 22nd, 2007 5 Comments »
Sweet, I get to make the first post about the 2007 Canadian Brewing Awards.
Another year of great times with some of the best people around. Tonight was like the Oscars for us folks in the Canadian brewing scene and although the weather sucked, fun times were had by all. Since it's a little after one in the morning I'm going to keep this short and let everyone else follow it up with how they did and give their $0.02. We had a good showing tonight bringing home an award in the North American Lager and Cream Ale categories, congratulations to our brewers Jason Britton and Adam Ramanauskas for brewing great beers. Congrats to all the brewers that won tonight especially the well represented OCB group.
I only managed to get a few pictures due to a technical issue (I forgot to recharge the battery) but check them out below.
Cheers

Toronto Festival of Beer is here August 7th, 2007 No Comments »
The 12th Toronto Festival of Beer, presented by our friends at The Beer Store, starts this week, so get your tickets while you still can. In the meantime, here's a story from Aonghus Kealy at Metro News about the festival that represents the Ontario Craft Brewers very nicely.
still can.
Aonghus's story features his 12 things not to be missed at the fest…we draw your attention to #12:
12. Ontario Craft Beers … yum!: Eat and drink locally. And there are a number of reasons to try some OCB beers:
- Beer ice cream, by Great Lakes Brewing (Booth 55), served out of a bicycle fridge.
- Neustadt Springs’ re-introducing Scottish Pale Ale in Booth 47. “It’s only 4.5 per cent and it’s ideal because it has afor the summer,” said Neustadt’s Val Simpson. nice bite to it
- Brick’s Waterloo Wheat finally ventures into Toronto. Booth 56.
If this doesn't make you thirsty, see a doctor.
Great Lakes brewing up a special batch of Project X July 5th, 2007 3 Comments »
Just a quick note to let you know Great Lakes has got a new beer on the way. It's a one-off batch of 1,000 litres, so about a dozen or so kegs that we're hoping to send to some of the usual suspects downtown. Hopefully it'll do its thing over the weekend and we'll have it ready to go by late next week.
We're tossing around the idea of keeping it in its natural state (no filtration) but we'll see how she goes. We threw a boatload of hops into the secondary so we're hoping it comes out nice and hoppy…mmm. You can see its home (the fermenter) for the next week or so (click for a larger view). Tentative name is Project X…more info to come!
