LCBO District #11 Visits Ontario Craft Brewers May 2nd, 2008 No Comments »
Last year, I had the pleasure of sitting beside Chris Elliot (District Manager for the LCBO) at a Beer Guys & Gals training session. The LCBO “Beer Guys & Gals” are the brilliant group of people that the LCBO employs and trains to help and to empower YOU beer lovers to explore the ever-expanding beer section at the LCBO. When Chris and I met, we talked about having some of his store managers ‘live in the shoes of an OCB brewer for a day’….. well…. as we all know – time fly’s by and we pulled the day together just last week!
The OCB hosted the Chris Elliot and 15 of his managers from District 11 (Mississauga/Oakville/Burlington). The group visited 5 OCB breweries: Cameron’s Brewing Company, Black Oak Brewing Company, Great Lakes Brewery, Nickel Brook Beers, and Trafalgar Brewing Company.
Attendees spent the morning at these breweries and enjoyed a brewery tour, a quick sampling of some of OCB beer… and then it was time to work!! Though not all the breweries were brewing that day…. there’s never a shortage of work to be done! Attendees were put to work doing quality checks (with some sampling of beer in the early stages of ‘brewing’ cycle), Kettles were scrubbed… and so much more. Not to worry though – fun was had by all!
Following a morning of work, the group were invited by Mike Arnold of Trafalgar brewing to enjoy chef George’s great food at The Tide House! Everyone enjoyed a fantastic meal, with food made with beer (the chilli is my personal favourite!) along with a beer matching (who can resist the Maple Beer?!). The OCB shared some insight as to all the exciting things happening this summer – including the OCB’s Discovery Pack re-launch!
The OCB was really pleased to have Chris and his team visit a few of our breweries for the day! I always say that the best way to experience the OCB is to visit the brewery first hand! Thank you Chris for your enthusiasm and for your continued support as the OCB builds our partnership with the LCBO!
Enjoy a couple of photo’s from the day – we hope to see some of Chris’s team ‘jump on this blog’ and share some of their experiences from the day!
Cheers!
Relaxing after a day’s work at an OCB Brewery!

Interview Chris Lowry, Network Director, Green
01:05 – This episode was taped at the first annual Brewers Plate in Toronto, an event that paired OCB beers with gourmet dishes all made from local ingredients. In this episode Chris Lowry from Green Enterprise Toronto discusses the event, how the idea came about and why supporting locally produced food is so important. Paul de Campo from Slow Food Toronto discusses what Slow Food is and the roll local brewers play in supporting the Slow Food movement. Finally Jamie Kennedy from Jamie Kennedy Kitchens talks about why he is supporting the event and what he does at his restaurants to support the local food movement.

Orange Peel Ale March 5th, 2008 7 Comments »
Spring is almost here…and so is the return of Orange Peel Ale!
Due to overwhelming demand last year, Orange Peel Ale will soon be available for spring AND summer this year. Bottles will be available from our retail store later this month, and at the LCBO in late May until the end of the summer.
We brew Orange Peel Ale with fresh oranges and peels right in the boil, resulting in a slightly fruity and citrusy taste. We can’t wait to crack open a bottle and celebrate the return of the warm weather, and hope you can stop by the brewery for a taste too.
Limited quantities of our Winter Ale remain - and judging by the weather today it’s still very much in season.
Cheers,
John

Hi There
Yes, slowly I’m being dragged into the 20th century (still kicking and screaming)
Well just as bit of background, I’m the Black Oak Guy who does almost everything but make the beer. I’ve got some great people to work with. But i do have to deal with a few people in the OCB. Things are pretty busy at the brewery so i don’t have too much time for podcasting but i look forward to learning more. I’m a dial up kind of guy so there’s a lot to get caught up on. Unlike other brewers I don’t have the time to sit around and blog in my underwear.
Our Double Chocolate Cherry Stout is selling well at the Brewery store, and we’ve got a few interesting changes an improvements that we’re planning. So with that teaser i’ll sign off and start the long uphill learning process (be patient)
Thanx & Cheers

Learning about blogging March 5th, 2008 3 Comments »
The OCB is doing a how-to-blog session right now! I’m teleconferencing, so they don’t know I’m actually surfing the Internet in my undies.
Ha-ha!
Hopefully, you the reader will get much more blogs from lots more brewers over the next couple weeks.
Hey Reader, how about posting a comment asking a specific brewery to write something and see if they meet the challenge.
I’ll start - Red rover, red rover, I call Black Oak over!
Cheers,
Steve

Beau’s on the LCBO shelf February 28th, 2008 10 Comments »
Well, we finally did it! That’s right, we got our LCBO #. We’ve lined up stores. We’ll be delivering on Tuesday. The LCBO! Now we just need to figure out how to invoice them, how delivering works and stuff like that. You know, the everything else.
My sister, Jen, spent a half day calling prospective stores and got 10 lined up, which was really cool. Here’s the list so far:
RIDEAU & KING EDWARD
275 RIDEAU STREET, CORNER OF KING EDWARD AND RIDEAU ST, OTTAWA-CENTRAL, K1N5Y3
RICHMOND & KIRKWOOD
222 RICHMOND ROAD, OTTAWA-WEST, K1Z6W6
CARLING & WOODROFF
2211 CARLING AVENUE, OTTAWA-WEST, K2B7E9
WOODROFFE & BASELINE (COLLEGE SQUARE)
1363 WOODROFFE AVENUE - UNIT A, COLLEGE SQUARE, OTTAWA-NEPEAN, K2G1V7
HUNT CLUB & MERIVALE (NEPEAN CROSSROADS)
543 WEST HUNT CLUB RD., OTTAWA-NEPEAN, K2G5W5
INNES & TENTH LINE
4220 INNES RD, UNIT #1 BUILDING F, OTTAWA-ORLEANS, K4A5E6
HWY 34 & HWY 17
56 MAIN STREET EAST, HAWKESBURY, K6A1A3
BARRACK & KING
34 BARRACK STREET, KINGSTON, K7K7A9
PRINCESS & CONCESSION
905 PRINCESS STREET, KINGSTON, K7L1G7
QUEEN MARY & BATH
1280 BATH ROAD, BAYOU PLAZA, KINGSTON, K7M4X3
Pretty exciting stuff. I started looking into the listing process in May 2007 and its been a long journey getting here. The staff at the LCBO have been really quite helpful though; I can’t imagine how difficult it would have been without their extra help.
